Social Distancing Portraits
“On March 14th I got frustrated with feeling paralyzed - sitting at home endlessly reading the news - and decided to do the only thing I'm qualified to do and make some art. I put a long lens on my camera and headed out by foot. As I walked towards the shopping centre I asked people from a distance if I could take their pictures from far away. Many said no, but some said yes. I wanted to see if I could capture this strange tense in-between moment we are currently in. Things are changing fast yet we're also sort of stuck in time not knowing what comes next. I’ll keep doing this as long as it makes sense - I’m hoping this project doesn’t last too long.”
That is what I wrote on Instagram to accompany my first portrait at the beginning of the Covid pandemic in March, 2020. The portraits were uploaded to my Instagram account over the first year of the pandemic. When I decided to end the project there were 237 portraits.
I asked the subjects to stand as still as they can and recorded them from at least five meters away using a long lens. The resulting videos, each about 30-seconds long, capture this strange in-between moment we were in. Each portrait is accompanied by a short interview giving us insight into the subjects’ thoughts. These intimate portraits act as a record, documenting our collective experience as well as our individual emotions. By examining our shared experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic, I think I was able to highlight the isolation it caused and the very real human need to connect.
The musical compositions for each video are by Brigitte Dajczer or Daniel Ingram.
The project is being toured by the Royal BC Museum in Victoria.

"Today I studied at the library, I'm tired. I have a final exam. My uncle is taking care of me. I'm not worried."

"It was our last yoga class, they are closing down tonight. It’s part of our community, it’s going to change. We’ll miss it. It’s surreal, you can’t believe that your life is going to be so much different, but people adapt. It’ll be interesting to see how. Things will be different when we get to the other side. Yoga is helpful to stay centered. It’s important to find those places of peace.”

"I feel like it’s calm now. We are worried about the economy. I’m worried about losing so many jobs. These are tough times, I don’t know how long this is going to last for, maybe a few months. My company is completely working from home. The world is upside-down now.”

“We’re boxing, trying to keep it positive. We don’t want to stop completely but we’re taking it easy, we just want to stay in shape. I think our doctors are working hard, I believe they are working days and nights, they’re under a lot of pressure. Once they are 100 percent about it they’ll take care of it. We have to keep it positive, it’s going to be okay, everyone is going to be okay.”

“We’re just lying low, and trying not to be fearful. I think it’s going to last another 4-8 weeks. One thing I’ve learned is that it’s not what you believe that matters now, it’s the collective.”

"This moment in history is a great time to push for reform. Being stressed out by Covid, and obviously more instances of the same shit, not anything different, not anything new, nothing Jurassic, unfortunately. Another instance where an innocent Black man is killed. It’s an issue that runs a lot deeper than just Black men getting killed, it’s an issue that stems from the government. The foul play, accepted foul play through rules and the pen of the rich white man up top. Finally everyone is coming out globally - it’s not the first time something like this has happened - but this is a better time with everyone coming out and pushing for reform, waking up, educating themselves. Finally we’ll see some real change."

"This year has been a ton of drama. In this social isolation I’ve actually gotten the opportunity to be closer to my friends and my family. I’ve pushed myself to be more social in spite of this isolation. I’d actually say this has been one of my best years because I’ve been spending more time with friends and family. Like they say - diamonds are created when coal is pushed with enough pressure."

"I’m F to M trans, I’m transitioning from female to male. Covid has pushed back waiting lists for everyone. The waiting lists were already bad, but now everything has been cancelled. I was scheduled for bottom surgery in April but now it’s pushed to 2021, and I’ve been laid off since March as well. Covid has really impacted the whole community. We used to go out to bars and drag shows and gatherings, then Covid just bulldozed everything for the community. I’ve just been coping by trying to focus on schoolwork and trying to keep my mind off other things. I’m glad I managed to have top surgery before Covid hit."

"This has been one of the best times as a teacher, people are focused on connecting. When we came back in June the excitement of the students coming back to the classroom after being away was amazing, they just wanted to connect. It’s been difficult too, my grandfather is sick so not being able to go home to see him has been hard, but coming back to work has been good. I never thought to be living during a pandemic, now we are part of history."
