A Vulgar Picture

A Vulgar Picture was produced in a studio as part of a shoot for the final episode of the Quebec television show Mange ta Ville which aired in the fall of 2010. It was inspired by a trip I made this summer to Sir John Soane's Museum in London. The museum's collection includes the original eight paintings in William Hogarth's A Rake's Progress (1733). I had become enchanted with the series of etchings based on the paintings when I was an undergraduate student studying printmaking, so the opportunity to see the originals made a strong impression on me. In A Vulgar Picture I have tried to distil aspects of these works into a single image.

The models include well-known singer-songwriter Pierre-Lapointe, Mange ta Ville host Catherine Pogonat, actor Eric Bernier, the band We Are Wolves, and the staff of Mange ta Ville. All the props were culled from the basement of Radio Canada (CBC), I had them bring all the fake food, stuffed animals, and drinking jugs they had.
